2,400 people were killed in China in 2013: report

China, the world's leading executioner, executed 2,400 people last year, according to a US-based rights group, providing rare insight into a figure Beijing attempts to keep a secret.

According to the Dui Hua Foundation, the number has decreased by 20% since 2012. However, because China feels strongly about the matter, it has not made any effort to draw attention to the fact that the death sentence is being used less frequently.

The nonprofit group, which advocates for improved treatment and mercy for detainees who pose a risk to public safety, stated that it received its data from "a judicial official with access to the number of executions carried out each year."

"China executes more people annually than the rest of the world combined, but since the Supreme People's Court regained final review authority over death sentences in 2007," according to Dui Hua, the country has executed much fewer individuals.

According to Dui Hua, who cited a source by the Southern Weekly newspaper, China's top court reviews all death sentences handed down in the nation and returned 39% of them to lower courts for more proof last year.

Annual reports on the use of the death penalty in 22 nations are released by Amnesty International. According to its 2013 report, there were 14% more executions globally in 2012 than there were in 2011.

Amnesty International has not released data on China's death penalty since 2009 because of informational obstacles.

According to Amnesty International, the total number of executions by death sentences in 2013 was 778. If the 2,400 figure is correct, then China executed more people than all other nations combined.

Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Iran

Nearly 80% of all executions outside of China were said to have occurred in Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Iraq. According to Amnesty International, 369 persons are said to have been executed in Iran and 169 in Iraq.

By the end of 2013, at least 23,392 persons had received death sentences globally, the majority of them were for drug-related offenses, according to the rights group.
