This poignant photograph was taken today 106 years ago. 

By the end of the First World War over 2,000,000 British soldiers were permanently disabled, of whom 40,000 had lost their arms or legs. Despite the British government encouraging firms to employ these disabled veterans, too many were unable to find work after the war.
