After being found guilty of raping and killing a youngster the previous year, a Yemeni man was put to death by firing squad in a public square.

In December of last year, Yahia al-Raghwa, 22, was convicted guilty of raping and killing 11-year-old Hamdi Abdullah at his barbershop in Sanaa, the capital of Yemen.

On Monday, in front of hundreds of people, including the victim's family, he was shot by a firing squad in a public area in the capital.
In photos from the execution, al-Raghwa was escorted to the square by guards and made to kneel. Then his body was hauled away after he was shot in the back of the head in broad daylight.
With his passing, there have been nine executions nationwide so far this year.
Amnesty International lists 59 nations that still have the death sentence in place, with Yemen being one of the most common users.
It is used for a number of sins, both violent and nonviolent, such as adultery and apostasy.

Amnesty International has verified that 13 people were executed in Yemen last year. However, as no official numbers are disclosed, the true toll may be much higher.
Although there have been stories of beheadings and stonings in recent years, all of those deaths were by firing squad.
It's unclear if al-Raghwa had a fair trial in the deeply devout desert nation, which has a dismal reputation on human rights.

Yemen's sharia law grants families of victims of some types of murder the authority to urge the execution of the criminal, offer a pardon freely, or pardon the offender in exchange for payment.
