Russian surgeon Leonid Rogozov, part of the sixth Soviet Antarctic expedition, became seriously ill during a polar winter. He needed an operation, and as the only doctor on the team, he realized he would have to do it himself. Despite the danger of his appendix bursting, Rogozov decided to perform an auto-appendectomy, despite the cold war and the need for Moscow's blessing.


Dr. Rogozov, a surgeon, prepared for a surgical operation in Antarctica, where he had to remove an appendage. He had a detailed plan and assigned specific tasks to his colleagues, including using a mirror to see his work. 


Despitefully the challenges, Rogozov managed to complete the operation without losing consciousness and was relieved to have another chance to live. He returned to his normal duties two weeks later.
