Dale Eldon Christensen of Gray, Iowa, a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army, was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions on July 16, 1944, in New Guinea. Christensen served as a second lieutenant in Troop E of the 112th Cavalry Regiment. On July 16, 1994, along the Driniumor River in New Guinea, he single-handedly attacked and silenced an enemy machine gun. He was killed in action on August 4, 1944, while leading his platoon on another attack against an enemy position.
