Man who stabbed wife to death in Rocky Crest makes first appearance in Katutura Magistrate Court
Staff Reporter
ROBERT Marlo McNab, the man who allegedly fatally stabbed his wife, Helen Onesmus, in their Rocky Crest flat on 16 February 2024, appeared in the Katutura Magistrate Court on 10 April 2024, after being discharged from the hospital subsequent to his recovery from self-inflicted stab wounds, as he allegedly tried to take his own life after killing Onesmus.
According to the police report at the time, McNab stabbed the late Onesmus multiple times with a pair of scissors resulting in her death. Three knives and scissors were allegedly found next to Onesmus’ lifeless body. It is further alleged the couple were in the process of divorcing.
During the court appearance, family and friends filled the corridors of the court riddled with sombre expressions, as some questioned the suspect's motives for the brutal crime, while others raised concern about the spike in Gender-Based Violence cases in the country.
In the past four days alone, three women were slain by their boyfriends, including an Usakos woman identified as 29-year-old Lena Williams, stabbed to death by her boyfriend, 29-year-old Frieda Amadhila, who was also stabbed to death, and an unidentified 50-year-old woman from Grootfontein, who was stabbed to death and burned with acid on 9 April 2024.
During a time when the nation reels from shocking news headlines on Gender-Based Violence, the late Onesmus’s words ring true from beyond the grave, as the deceased, in a Facebook post in 2019, said that Namibia has turned a blind eye to GBV. In the current case, the suspect, McNab, appeared before Magistrate Johannes Shuuveni.
The suspect, during the court appearance, said that he wished to waive his rights to a lawyer but was, however, only advised to do so at a later stage by the magistrate. The matter was postponed to 31 May 2024, for legal aid, and for police investigations to continue. The suspect was married to the late Onesmus for a year and a half and does not have any children with her.
