 By the late 20th century, corporal punishment had been eliminated from the legal systems of most developed countries.
In the twenty-first century, the legality of corporal punishment in various settings differs by jurisdiction. 

Internationally, the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries saw the application of human rights law to the question of corporal punishment in a number of contexts

  Captain Ben Salomon was a dentist who wound up on Saipan in the middle of one of the largest mass-banzai charges of the entire Pacific War.  Before it was over, he killed over 100 Japanese soldiers in defense of his aid station. Dale Eldon Christensen of Gray, Iowa, a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army, was posthumously awarded the  Medal of Honor for his heroic actions on July 16, 1944, in New Guinea. Christensen served as a second lieutenant in Troop E of the 112th Cavalry Regiment. On July 16, 1994, along the Driniumor River in New Guinea, he single-handedly attacked and silenced an enemy machine gun.  Related :  Married woman caught red-handed che*ting with a married man Three days later, he surveyed an enemy strong point alone, then led his platoon in an assault that successfully destroyed the position. He was killed in action on August 4, 1944, while leading his platoon on another attack against an enemy position.
