The guy on the left is named William West.

The guy on the right is also named William West.

Both Men are identical and also bear the same name.


The first William West was sent to Leavenworth Prison in Kansas in 1901.


When the second William West arrived at the same prison for a minor crime two years later in 1903, he was told that he was already in prison serving a life sentence for murder.

After some confusion, the staff realised that they had two inmates with the same name that looked pretty much the same.


The two men were not related in any way, and law enforcement quickly realised that a more reliable method of identification was necessary.

Approximately 1,000 women from the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp, among them Anne and Margot Frank and Auguste van Pels, were selected for forced labour in the German war industry. They left in the night of 1-2 November 1944 by train, they arrived in Bergen-Belsen two days later.  This was a concentration camp in Northern Germany, where both prisoners of war and Jews were imprisoned. Bergen-Belsen was also used as a transit camp to other camps. The women were put up in tents, but these tents were badly damaged a few days later in a storm. The "last of the last" of the World War II holdouts, Teruo Nakamura refused to believe the war had ended and lived in a tiny hut on Indonesia's Morotai Island until he was discovered in 1974.
