The man found guilty as a minor is given the death penalty by a Saudi court. " Brutality of life"

Abdullah al-Huwaiti was arrested at the age of 14, and after being found guilty of murder, he was sentenced to death at the age of 17.

A Saudi court has maintained Abdullah al-Huwaiti's death sentence. The adolescent was found guilty of acts he may have committed as a minor.

Huwaiti, who was convicted of murder and armed robbery at the age of 17 and arrested in 2017 when he was just 14 years old, was sentenced to death by Saudi Arabia's Court of Appeal on Monday.

The death penalty against Huwaiti, who is currently 19 years old, "defies United Nations experts' plea that his death sentence be reversed," according to a statement released by the UK-based legal NGO Reprieve.

"It is intolerably cruel to sentence a kid to death. Abdullah has experienced increasing levels of emotional stress with every court decision, and he has lived his whole adolescence in constant terror of being put to death. "He needs to be freed right away," Reprieve continued.

Huwaiti's mother claimed on Twitter that her son had no criminal history and was innocent of the accusation that he killed a military officer. In her Twitter replies, she stood up for her son against the "injustice" and insisted that Saudi authorities detain the actual criminal.

She also urged Mohammed bin Salman, the Crown Prince, and King Salman to step in and preserve Kuwait.

Legal experts from the United Nations pleaded with Saudi Arabia in May to overturn Huwaiti's death sentence. Huwaiti lives in the western region of Tabuk.

Since it is "inherently cruel to execute children," the experts urged the monarchy to "abolish the imposition of the death penalty for juveniles for all crimes, without exception."

Human rights organizations questioned the quality of the evidence used against Huwaiti and how it was gathered, casting doubt on the proceedings of his initial trial. HRW claims that he had an alibi that positioned him 200 kilometers from the crime scene.

Huwaiti was detained without access to a counsel for four months following his detention in May 2017.

According to Reprieve, he was subjected to torture throughout his interrogation, including beatings and electrical wire whippings that left him unable to walk for several days.

According to Reprieve, at least five additional juvenile offenders in Saudi Arabia, besides Huwaiti, face the possibility of receiving death sentences for offenses committed as children.

Juvenile defendants in Saudi Arabia are only shielded from the death penalty by the juvenile law provided their crimes fall under a certain category.

King Salman issued a royal decree in April of last year that eliminated the death penalty for offenses committed as a minor and increased the maximum sentence to ten years in a juvenile prison center.

Rights organizations, however, are concerned about how it is being applied and have already issued a warning that certain young people are still subject to the death penalty.
