SilentHero: Steward Third Class Jesus Chargualaf Manalisay was born on April 3, 1921, on the island of Guam. Jesus was CHamoru, part of the indigenous population of Guam, and he and his family were farmers. He grew up in the village of Malesso’, attended school, and learned English.

Jesus enlisted in the US Navy on December 2, 1940, a time when racial segregation meant CHamoru servicemembers could only be mess attendants or stewards. After training, he volunteered to work on submarines and would spend the next three years aboard three submarines. The first of those three was the USS Narwhal, which was in Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.


After the attack, Jesus was transferred to the USS Finback, which participated in the Battle of Midway and conducted reconnaissance operations around Aleutian Islands Tanaga and Kiska.

Finally, in 1942 Jesus served aboard the USS Wahoo, on a mission to patrol the waters of New Guinea, Korea, the Kuril Islands, Hokkaido, and western Japan.

 On its seventh mission - to infiltrate the Sea of Japan and sink enemy ships - the USS Wahoo sunk four ships. As it was returning home in 1943, it had to pass through a narrow straight between the islands of Hokkaido and Sakhalin, and while there it was spotted by enemy planes and sunk. All 80 sailors, including Jesus, were killed. 

 

After the Pearl Harbor attack, Jesus’s home island of Guam was invaded by the Japanese and their small defense force was quickly overpowered. For the next two and a half years, the Japanese occupied the island and life was brutal for the CHamorus, with many atrocities carried out against civilians. However, they put up a fierce resistance, and on July 21, 1944,  the US military invaded and brought an end to the Japanese occupation.

  Captain Ben Salomon was a dentist who wound up on Saipan in the middle of one of the largest mass-banzai charges of the entire Pacific War.  Before it was over, he killed over 100 Japanese soldiers in defense of his aid station. In 2002, 58 years later, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “...serving at Saipan, on July 7, 1944, as the Surgeon for the 2nd Battalion, 105th Infantry Regiment, 27th Infantry Division. The battalion was attacked by an overwhelming force estimated between 3,000 and 5,000 Japanese soldiers.  It was one of the largest attacks attempted in the Pacific Theater during World War II. The enemy soon penetrated the battalions’ perimeter and inflicted overwhelming casualties.  In the first minutes of the attack, approximately 30 wounded soldiers walked, crawled, or were carried into Captain Salomon’s aid station. As the perimeter began to be overrun, it became increasingly difficult for Captain Salomon to work on the wounded.
